Abstract

The study of high frequency acoustic bottom backscatter at shallow grazing angles is only now emerging from infancy. With significant increases over the past ten years, the quantity of in situ data is just beginning to reach levels sufficient for meaningful analyses. Backscattering strength tends to follow Lambert’s rule at shallow grazing angles. Two main groups emerge from the database, suggesting two independent scattering processes: one driven by grains and the other by bubbles.
