Part of the book series: Studies in Theoretical Psycholinguistics ((SITP,volume 19))

Abstract

In this chapter, I present a summary of some of the work that has been done in the area of learnability and phonology. From there I move on to a discussion of one particular aspect of phonology: stress. I outline some of the characteristics of English stress. In order to do so, I present some of the machinery of metrical theory including illustrations of relevant terminology, and universal aspects of metrical systems. The chapter then outlines the specific theory of metrical phonology adopted: a parameterized version set out in Dresher and Kaye (1990). The metrical parameters of English, Polish, and Hungarian are given. The chapter concludes with a discussion of a learning theory for phonology. Issues such as the subset principle and default parameter settings are raised.
