Abstract
Second language researchers have utilized pied-piping (PiP) and preposition stranding (PS) in current research because of generally accepted linguistic markedness values attributed to this alternation. We will now examine these markedness values and review the claims on which they are based; that is, following the discussion in Chapter 1, we will examine the typological, syntactic, and subset criteria underlying these markedness claims and show the problems inherent in determining markedness values, particularly for PiP and PS. Finally, studies of piping and stranding in L2 acquisition will be examined—studies which seek to test a markedness hypothesis.
