Abstract

The ionisation of laser excited atoms is discussed within the frame of the first Born approximation. In contrast to spherically symmetric ground states a laser excited target yields in general triply differential cross sections not cylindrically symmetric around the momentum transfer. Numerical results for (e,3e) and (γ,2e) are presented. In particular, double photoionisation of an atom by circularly polarised light is shown to produce chiral photoelectron pairs. These electron pairs have the ability to distinguish a right-handed coordinate frame from a left-handed one. Triply differential cross sections are different for right and left circular polarised light.
