Abstract
The present and future development of the Russian Far East will take place within the broader scope of the newly constituted Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in general and within the Russian Federation in specific. More importantly, the development of the Russian Far East will occur within a much more extensive and competitive international marketplace in which individual commodities, areas and specific mineral deposits of the Far East must compete for exploration and development monies worldwide, in many cases with the newly formed states of the former Soviet republics and the previous CMEA nations.
