Overview
Mineral resources are of great importance to the development of the new Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) national economy and a major provider of hard currency earnings. The CIS is the world leader not only in proved reserves of hydrocarbons, coal, iron ore, nickel, cobalt, tin, tungsten, titanium, potassium, apatites, asbestos, and barite, but also in the production of a variety of other minerals. At present, there are about 7,000 mines in operation. Raw materials production accounts for about 20 percent of the total value of minerals development. During the last 30 years, minerals production in the former Soviet Union increased by 12 times.
