A Further Experiment Wherein the Hemispheres Which Could Not be Drawn Apart by Twenty-Four Horses are Separated by the Admission of Air

The New (So-Called) Magdeburg Experiments of Otto Von Guericke

Abstract

Because some damage almost always occurs when these hemispheres are separated and especially because they tend to lose their perfect symmetry as a result of their falling or striking the ground when they are being pulled apart by the horses, I had two other larger ones made, a cubit in % diameter. (But because craftsmen can rarely make vessels of this kind according to prescribed specifications, I found these hemispheres had diameters of only 95/100 parts of a Magdeburg cubit.) I was of the opinion that twenty-four horses could not pull these hemispheres apart but that a person could separate them by admitting air.
