Abstract
In anticipation against shortfall of Eucheuma seaweeds for the carrageenan industry, Eucheuma farming was initiated in Zanzibar in early 1989. Cultivation of E. cottonii failed but that of E. spinosum was encouraging. The result may later place Zanzibar on the map of world seaweed producers.
