Abstract

Liver transplantation as a clinical procedure has advanced considerably since its introduction in 1963 (1). The procedure no longer is considered intrinsically news worthy and is being performed worldwide at an increasing number of locations. Moreover, at some hospitals it is being performed several times a day and at others it is a routinely scheduled surgical procedure. With these changes in the frequency of performance of the procedure and the number of locations at which the procedure is being performed, the indications for the procedure have changed also. The procedure is still being performed as a life saving procedure for those with far advanced chronic liver disease but the basic rationale for the procedure has changed from one of a desperate effort at life salvage to one of preservation of life with an improvement in the quality of the preserved life and potentially also a cure of the underlying hepatic disease (2,3).
