Light Emission from the Tunnel Junction of the STM. Possible Role of Tcherenkov Effect

Abstract

Investigations of the light emission from the tunnel junctions between different noble metals in air and in liquid ambient are reviewed. A new mechanism of light emission by the tunneling electrons similar to the Tcherenkov effect is suggested. Experiments with copper phthalocyanine molecules in the Au-Au tunnel junction are discussed.
