Abstract

The observed blue-shifted emission in soft x-ray lines typical of energetic solar flares, discovered by analyzing the spectroscopic data obtained with the Bent Crystal Spectrometer of the Solar Maximum Mission, is interpreted at the light of the results of numerical simulations of both thermal and non-thermal flares. The soft x-ray line profiles with pronounced blue wings observed during the impulsive phase are found to be consistent with a flare model with a hot thermal source located near the footpoints of the magnetic fluxtube. These same profiles, however cannot be reproduced with models of flares heated by electron beams.
