Abstract

Optical observations revealed the unique characteristics of SS 433. Through extensive optical coverage for more than a decade the parameters of the now commonly accepted kinematical model for SS 433 could be pinned down to highest accuracy (see Kemp et al., 1986 and Cherepashchuk, this volume). However, the physical properties of the jets and of the driving central engine can possibly best be determined through observations in the high energy X-ray range.
