Molecular Jets in OMC1-S

Abstract

The Orion Molecular Cloud, located only ≈ 500 pc from the Sun, is a very extended but narrow structure (~ 40 pc × 5 pc in the map of Bally et al. (1987)). It contains many filaments, of which the most well-known is OMC1, oriented approximately north-south. In the centre of OMC1 lies the highly luminous object IRc 2, which is associated with very fast molecular outflows (Δv ~ 100 km s^-1 ). Located ≈ 1.5′ south is the much less studied OMC1-S core (Fig. 1). This contains an embedded object (detected at 400 μm by Keene et al., (1982)), a dust condensation and a remarkable monopolar molecular jet (Schmid-Burgk et al., 1990), and a compact bipolar outflow (Ziurys et al., 1990).
