Abstract

Serotonergic (5-HT) receptor systems have been implicated in the control of many ethanol-related behaviors, such as voluntary ethanol consumption, anxiety-like behaviors during ethanol withdrawal, discrimination of ethanol as a stimulus, and modulation of ethanol intoxication. Several classes of serotonin receptors (5-HT1A5-HT,,, 5-HT, and 5-HT,) may be important in mechanisms underlying the development and/or maintenance of ethanol tolerance and dependence by modulating emotions (anxiety), homeostasis, and adaptive processes. The impact of drugs selective for various types of serotonin receptors are discussed in relation to their effect on anxiety-like behaviors during ethanol withdrawal and voluntary ethanol consumption.
