Abstract

Several years of intense experimental investigations have left the question of quantum electron solidification in two dimensions open. We re-examine the problem by first reviewing the fundamental concepts of 2D solid formation, then look carefully at a full range of experiments performed on GaAs/A1GaAs heterostructures in the extreme quantum limit. Finally we focus on recent experiments using surface acoustic waves that determine the dynamical conductivity of the 2D electron system, and discuss these findings at small filling factors.
