Abstract

Rice coleoptiles and aged tissues of storage beetroot were used for studies on changes in membrane functions during anoxia. In beetroot tissues, membrane permeability to K+, Na+ and Cl− increased at about 120h after transfer to anoxia, well before betacyanin, an internal dye in vacuoles, commenced to leak from the tissues at 160h. Membranes of these tissues depolarized to their diffusion potentials at the start of anoxia and remained at this level till the cell collapsed.

In contrast, anoxic rice coleoptiles had membrane potentials of about -120 mV, which was close to the potentials in aerobic rice coleoptiles (-125mV). Anoxic rice coleoptiles also showed substantial uptakes of C1− and sugars. We conclude that the maintenance of electrogenic potentials supports some energy-dependent transports in anoxic rice coleoptiles.
