Abstract

The cultivation of date palm has great potential in Thar desert owing to favourable climatic conditions during flowering, fruiting and at harvest. At Jaisalmer, in Western Rajasthan, climate is extremely dry and hot during April-June (mean average rainfall 144 mm per annum and maximum temperature 43.1℃C during May). Date palm plantation tried at Bhojka near Jaisalmer has been very successful in sandy saline alkali soils EC,0.4-1.35 dS m-1, pH 8.9-9.9). Improved date palm cultivars were planted at Bhojka during the years 1975 and 1981. These trees are now in bearing. Cultivars Halawy, Hayani, Khadrawy, Shamran and Zahidi have shown promise. By the end of June, fruits attained Doka stage and by the second week of July, started producing pind fruits in all the cultivars. Zahidi had maximum pulp thickness (5.3 mm) and total soluble solids (42.5%) at Doka.
