Abstract
This study has been conducted to study the mechanism of salt tolerance in the tomato cv. ‘Edkawy’ and ‘Ace’. Seedlings of the two cultivars have been treated by NaCI salts up to 150 mM in aerated hydroponic culture. Ion accumulation in the cell sap of different plant parts showed that Edkawy plants accumulate more Na+ and Cl- in its leaves than the less salt tolerant variety Ace and the reverse was true in the stem. Mature leaves of both cvs. had have higher Na+and Cl-and less K+than the young leaves. Osmotic pressure in the cell sap was higher in the leaves of Edkawy cv. than in Ace cv.
The fruit yield was less affected by salinity treatment in Edkawy than in Ace and the fruit number of Edkawy cv. was slightly affected in 100mM. However, the total soluble salt concentration (TSS), acidity, electrical conductivity (EC), vitamin C, reducing sugars K+and Na+were increased by increasing salinity levels while pH was decreased. Under 150 mM NaC1 salinity the yield of both cvs. was affected but the reduction in Edkawy cv. was clearly less than in Ace.
