Environmental aspects of geographical distribution of mangrove in the United Arab Emirates

Part of the book series: Tasks for vegetation science ((TAVS,volume 27))

Abstract

Mangrove vegetation of the U.A.E. coasts is represented by the Avicennia marina community type. Using Landsat satellite images and topograhic maps, localities of mangrove growth are recorded along the whole coasts of U.A.E. and a distribution map is produced. Maps of local distribution of mangrove in Abu Dhabi lagoon, Khor Um Al-Qywain and Khor Kalba are also produced.

Mangrove is found to occur at some coastal lagoons (Khors), which are characterized by certain environmental aspects. These aspects fall into four groups: climatic conditions, geomorphological features of the lagoons, water characteristics, and man-made modification. The relative importance of each environmental aspect is analyzed with respect to mangrove growth and distribution.
