Abstract

In 1990 a conference on the development of harvestable ecosystems using water above seawater strength salinity for irrigation was held at the University of the United Arab Emirates in Al Ain. The meeting was sponsored by H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al Nahyan. The conference was organized to enlist the most knowledgeable scientists from around the world to give advice for the newly started trial plantations of many salt tolerant species. The trial plantations were started in 1989 near the coast of Abu Dhabi in Mussafah and subsequently shifted to Nahshallah, a new research farm carrying the name of H.H. Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan. From Nahshallah the experimental plantations were extended to many locations along the coastline. The most successful species with varying methods of seawater irrigation were Conocarpus spp., Laguncularia spp., and especially a new cultivar Spartina alterniflora c. v. Nahshallah.
