Functional echographic biometry of extraocular muscles

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Documenta Ophthalmologica Proceedings Series ((DOPS,volume 55))

Abstract

Standardized A-scan echography was used to measure the thickness of the lateral and medial recti in the primary gaze position, abduction and adduction in normal subjects and patients with Graves ophthalmopathy. Graves patients’ muscles were significantly thicker in all positions studied. While increases in muscle diameter caused by contraction were similar in controls and patients, the latter showed less thinning during relaxation.
