Contributions to Quantitative Linguistics

Abstract

The starting-point for present-day theoretical quantitative research in language are the so called Zipf’s Laws (Zipf 1939, 1949) concerning the well-known dependencies between rank and frequency of linguistic units in texts, between frequency, length, polylexy, age and origin of linguistic units.

In this paper we can present merely a short overview of very extended studies in the statistical structure of Polish that have been performed within the project ‘Language Synergetics’. This survey refers in principle to two papers presented by us at the “First Quantitative Linguistics Conference QUALICO 1991”: ‘A model for describing multivariate relations among lexical units’ and “Polish contributions to the research project ‘Language Synergetics’: Data and results.”
