Abstract
The financial dimension of the break-up of the USSR and of current developments in what was the USSR is of great political importance and of great theoretical and practical interest. In this paper I mostly deal with monetary (banking, currency, international payments) aspects of this broad theme.
The author expresses gratitude for a useful exchange of ideas to Professor Sergei Dubinin (University of Moscow) and Professor John M. Letiche (University of California at Berkeley). He also benefited from the discussion on the paper at the SUERF Colloquium in Berlin, October 1992.
