Abstract

The collapse of the communist planned economies eliminated the most significant barrier to trade in Europe: the systemic difference between market economy and planned economy. The trade orientation of Eastern European countries towards the USSR, which was imposed on these countries by force and political power after the second world war, had to give way to the reintegration of Central and Eastern European countries into the rest of Europe. Natural ties and dominant trade with neighbouring countries prevailing until 1938 are being re-established.
