Abstract

After the Maastricht Summit many observers considered the route to a common currency in Europe as having become an irreversible one. It was the Danish referendum that cast first doubts on this view. It turned out that there are still many hurdles to be taken and, in the end, even a strong willingness to compromise may not suffice to reach the common goal.
