Abstract
In many countries the 1980s was a decade of unprecedented growth in bank lending and balance sheet positions. Above all, the competitive environment intensified markedly as banks faced more intra-sector competition, greater inter-sector competition, competition from a more innovative capital market, and global competitive pressures.
