Abstract

The service sector is currently experiencing particularly dynamic times. This dynamism presents itself in a considerable contribution to employment creation by the commercial service industries, as well as by the wave of mergers, acquisitions, and agreements for co-operation in such industries as finance, accounting, telecommunications, computer services, and airlines. Until recently, most services were almost entirely nationally, or even locally oriented, with the obvious exception of international commercial activities. And even in the last case, many business segments were and still are heavily regulated and protected by national laws, for example banking, insurance, and transportation (a.o. the cabotage system).
