Abstract

This article is aimed at providing evidence in support of the existence of a new class of Ca2+ antagonist, the prototype being pinaverium bromide, which exhibits selectivity for the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. It should be recalled that Ca2+ is implicated at different levels in the functions of the GI tract. As examples, Ca2+ plays roles in excitation-contraction coupling in smooth muscle of the esophagus, stomach, and intestine, it is involved in the regulation of blood flow (alterations of which could be related to the formation of ulcers), and Ca2+ overload can lead to hepatocellular injuries. Aspects related to GI motility will be emphasized herein.
