Abstract

Calcium overload is thought to be one of the processes contributing to neuronal death. Pathological enhancement of calcium transients can lead to disruption of cytoskeletal and membrane structures, adversely altering cellular function (1). Cytosolic free calcium increases in ischemic brain (2) and certain neurotoxins are known to elevate cytosolic calcium prior to the death of neurones (3,4).
