Abstract

Calcium ions are involved in both specialized cellular functions, such as contraction, excitability, signal transduction, and secretion, and basic metabolism, e.g., cell division, protein synthesis, and regulation of gene expression. The key role of Ca2+ in such a variety of physiological processes implies that the cytosolic concentration of free Ca2+ ([Ca2]i) is strictly controlled, and that specific mechanisms exist to gauge the concentration changes in the time scale required for each function (1,2).
