Abstract
Lipoprotein lipase is a key enzyme in the mobilization of fat from triglyceride-rich particles in human plasma. The composition of very low density lipoproteins (VLDL) and chylomicrons, which are secreted by the liver and the intestine, respectively, are important determinants of the composition, structure and catabolism of high (HDL) and low density lipoproteins (LDL). HDL and LDL communicate with triglyceride-rich lipoproteins through the action of cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) which exchanges the triglycerides of the latter for the cholesteryl esters of the former. Therefore, the amounts of triglyceride in VLDL and chylomicrons are important determinants of the triglyceride content and the metabolic fates of HDL and LDL. Under fasting conditions the major donor of triglycerides to LDL and HDL are the VLDL. Therefore, factors that affect fasting triglycerides are likely to have an effect on metabolism of all lipoproteins including the chylomicrons.
