Abstract
This paper discusses different methods of deriving information about turbulence parameters, such as dissipation and diffusion rates, from in-situ probings of the middle atmosphere. Problems and questions, such as Richardson number dependence, relation between horizontal and vertical gradients, and possible relations between the different ‘constants’ used in the equations, will be emphasized. We will show that the different turbulence parameters are very sensitive for even small changes in these ‘constants’. It is of special interest to investigate the role of turbulence in the energetics of the middle atmosphere. This problem can only be solved quantitatively if the turbulence Prandtl number and the turbulence parameters, especially the energy dissipation rate, can be derived with sufficient accuracy.
