Synopsis
The bicycle, based on the 5000 year old invention of the wheel, was first tried by man about a century ago. Since then it has tended to be a forerunner in the application of innovative technology, and many inventions now associated with the development of automobiles would have been unthinkable had they not first been tried out on bikes. As with other sports equipment, today’s competition bicycles are made of very advanced composite materials; on the other hand, for everyday production bikes, steel frames and wheels are proving stubbornly resilient to change.
