Abstract
Cone-nose bugs form the subfamily Triatominae (triatome bugs) within the family Reduviidae (reduvid bugs), and are found almost exclusively in the New World. They are all blood-sucking, temporary ectoparasites of warm-blooded animals. Species in three genera, particularly Rhodnius prolixus, Triatoma infestans and Panstrongylus megistus will feed habitually on humans and may transmit Trypanosoma cruzi the causative organism of American trypanosomiasis or Chagas’ disease.
