Abstract

The rapid modernization of the trunk and junction networks is resulting in significantly improved levels of communications quality and network maintainability and these must be carried through to the local network if the customer is to receive the improvement in quality of service this promises. Despite the increasing use of optical fibre and radio systems it is the metallic pair network that warrants most attention since, at least for the foreseeable future, it will remain the transmission medium for most customers.
