Abstract

The observation that tumours are the result of clonal expansions of neoplastic cells carrying karyotypic aberrations (Heim and Mitelman, 1987;Sandberg, 1990) lends convincing support to the somatic mutation theory of carcinogenesis. Such chromosomal changes were in the past often dismissed as epiphenomena of no pathogenetic importance, but latterly the paradigm has changed, and they are now generally accepted as crucial events in multistage tumourigenesis.
