Abstract

As outlined in Chapter 1, analysis of the genetic material of a microorganism offers the major advantage that it is not subject to phenotypic variation since it does not rely on the expression of particular properties belonging to the organism. In most microorganisms, the genetic material consists of double-stranded DNA (dsDNA), with the specific sequence of nucleotide base pairs providing the information content.
