Abstract

The twentieth century has been marked by an explosion in the availability of information. Huge amounts of data are collected to satisfy our demand for knowledge and understanding of the world in which we live, to exploit the resources necessary to provide the infrastructure of human life and to manage our societies. The revolution in information technology has done much to influence these activities. The development of digital computer systems and sophisticated methods of communication have had a profound effect on the way individuals and organisations work, how we use our leisure time and interact with others from a local to a global scale.
