Abstract
To determine the relationship between the number of phases present in a system at thermal equilibrium and the number of components necessary to form these phases under given conditions of temperature, pressure, and composition, Gibbs developed the phase rule, which can be stated as
Where f = the number of variables necessary to describe the state of the system (the degrees of freedom) c = the number of components p = the number of phases.
