Abstract
Breathing has been closely linked with the spirit of man since antiquity: the word inspiration is an obvious example. The importance of nasal function was recognized early and the ancient Indian culture had an elementary knowledge of rhinology. They were the first to describe nasal polyps but the word polyp was first used by Hippocrates (poly pous means many footed or feet) and accurately describes the condition that occurs in the ethmoid sinuses.
