H-reflex spinal cord monitoring during vertebral column stabilization surgery

  • Chapter

Abstract

A serious complication that can follow vertebral column stabilization surgery is the appearance of spinal cord lesions1,2. Without considering surgical errors, these lesions can be due to an impairment of the spinal cord blood supply caused by mechanical stress, e.g. vertebral distraction by the Harrington or Cotrel-Debousset (CD.) rods, or a combination of this with anaesthetics. At an early stage this kind of impairment can be reversible if prompt action is taken.
