Abstract

IGFBP-I is a 25.3 kDa protein and is one of 6 structurally related proteins which bind and modulate the bioactivity of IGF-I and IGF-II. It is synthesized primarily in the liver and decidualized uterine endometrium, and is distributed primarily in the intravascular space and lymph. Its physiological role appears to be in glucose counter-regulation and IGF-mediated substrate utilization. Measurement of IGFBP-I in serum may serve as a marker of insulin action and hepatocyte function.
