Abstract

Since the last review of mass spectrometry of textile dyes1, extraordinary developments have taken place in the field of mass spectrometry. New desorption ionization and ion evaporation methods have been introduced, including fast atom bombardment (or liquid secondary mass spectrometry), plasma desorption, laser desorption, thermospray, electrospray, and ion spray. These new ionization techniques complement the older ionization methods of electron impact, chemical ionization, desorption chemical ionization and field desorption by facilitating the direct analysis of polar, ionic, nonvolatile and thermally labile compounds, such as sulfonated azo dyes, without the need for prior derivatization. Although these new ionization techniques have expanded the range of compounds that can be analyzed using mass spectrometry, there is still no single technique that is suitable for the analysis of all classes of dyes. Therefore, gas-phase ionization techniques such as electron impact and chemical ionization remain necessary and useful for the analysis of volatile compounds.
