Abstract

Surface-active agents are compounds which will adsorb at an air-water or oil-water interface and at the surface of solids. The adsorption process plays a fundamental role in an understanding of the properties of surfactants (an acronym for surface-active agents), since it is the change in interfacial free energy and surface charge resulting from adsorption which leads to their emulsifying and suspending properties. In addition to adsorption at interfaces, surfactants give rise to aggregates, named micelles, provided their concentration attains a threshold value (critical micelle concentration, cmc). Adsorption and micellization are, therefore, the two ways by which surfactants display their unusual properties.
