Biological catalysis and biotechnology

  • Chapter
The Chemical Industry

Abstract

In 1980 the Spinks Report1 defined biotechnology as the ‘application of biological organisms, systems or processes to manufacturing industry’. This is a very broad definition. Its logical conclusion, with ourselves included amongst the biological organisms, might lay claim to the sum total of all human activity. This review will take a much narrower definition which focuses on the industrial uses of biological catalysis for the manufacture of chemical products.
