Abstract
The aims of this chapter are twofold. Firstly, it will give an overview of that diverse part of manufacturing industry which is called the chemical industry. In doing so a number of topics are introduced briefly which will be discussed in greater detail in later chapters in this book. It will give the reader an idea of what the industry comprises, what it does, how it is organised and sub-divided, and how its products are converted into useful end or consumer products. The second aim of this chapter is to serve as a lead into the specific topics which are covered in more detail in the following chapters.
