The ecology and conservation of Papilio machaon in Britain

  • Chapter

Abstract

Papilio machaon (swallowtail) is a widespread and abundant species of butterfly, found throughout the Holarctic, through Europe, temperate Asia to Japan, and in North America. One might then be tempted to ask why we should be concerned with conserving this species in Britain. Anyone who has experienced the excitement of seeing this spectacular butterfly skimming over reed beds and open water in its natural habitat, will consider this a foolish question, but, even so, there are good scientific reasons for wishing to conserve our own swallowtail.
