Abstract

Particle size analysis by means of sieves (sieve analysis) is one of the oldest methods and one of the most widespread even today. Its range of application is between 3 μrn and 125 mm, i.e. almost 5 powers of 10; it is even expanded if further separation devices (filters, porous layers, etc.) are taken into account in addition to the sieves. The change of the particle properties, however, in such a wide range of measurement requires the use of specific methods which can be employed only in a relatively small range of particle sizes.
