Sediment mass wasting in the Canary Basin

  • Chapter

Abstract

The Canary Basin lies off NW Africa and has an area, including its subareal drainage basin, of 3.36 million km2 (Fig. 42.1). The volcanic islands of Madeira and the Canary Chain lie within the basin, the deepest part of which is represented by the Madeira Abyssal Plain (MAP). Early studies of mass wasting in the basin were made by Embley (1976), Embley and Jacobi (1977) and Embley (1982) and these have been synthesized into map form (Jacobi and Hayes 1984, 1992). The abyssal plain has been studied in great detail (see synthesis by Weaver et al. 1989) and a complete geological history has been determined for the last 730000 yr (Weaver et al. 1992). The main elements of this history are.
