Abstract
In the development of sustainable farming systems, both environmental and economic aspects need to be studied. An interesting question is whether the restructuring of the Common Agricultural Policy by EC commissioner MacSharry, which aimed at reducing production surpluses, will be an incentive for extensification.
A farm economic Linear Programming model was made for arable farms in a newly reclaimed area of the Netherlands, called South Flevoland. The model was extended with environmental parameters like use of nitrogen fertilizer and pesticides. Different cropping methods were included in the model. This way the optimal farm organization under different circumstances and the effects on farm income and environment could be studied.
Model calculations showed that on the farms in question no use was made of set aside and that the MacSharry measures were hardly an incentive for extensification. The limitations of the model are discussed and it is indicated how the model can be improved.
